Over half of Japan firms want Olympics canceled or postponed – survey
By admin | | 0 Comments |

This picture taken on January 19, 2021 shows detail on the forehead of Miraitowa, the mascot for the coronavirus-delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics, at the office of the Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Tokyo. – When the Tokyo Olympics were postponed last year, officials promised they would open in 2021 as proof of humankind’s triumph over the coronavirus. But six months before the delayed start, victory over the virus remains distant, and fears are growing rapidly that the Games of the 32nd Olympiad may not happen at all. (Photo by Philip FONG / AFP) / TO GO WITH AFP STORY OLY-2020-2021-JAPAN-VIRUS-HEALTH BY ANDREW MCKIRDY TOKYO – Over half of Japanese firms believe the Tokyo Olympic Games should be canceled or postponed, a survey by think tank Tokyo Shoko Research showed on Monday, casting further doubt over the fate of the troubled Games. Japan is struggling to contain the coronavirus and lags behind western countries in rolling out vaccines, even as Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga vowed to get conditions in place to host the once-postponed Summer Olympics from July 23. The survey, conducted online on Feb. 1-8, showed 56.0% of the companies polled feel Japan should cancel or postpone the Games, up from 53.6% in the previous survey in August. Only 7.7% of the firms surveyed said the Games should proceed in full form as scheduled this year, down from 22.5% in the previous survey. Nearly 20% said the Games should be held with a limited number of spectators, while another 17% said it should proceed with no spectators, the survey showed. Over 70% firms said cancelling or postponing the Games will barely have any impact on their earnings. The survey, which covered over 11,000 firms, was conducted before Friday’s resignation of Tokyo 2020 Olympics chief Yoshiro Mori over sexist remarks that left the Olympics searching for a chief five months from the opening ceremony. Park Lane Stables Fundraising Update
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Annie's Whizz, a pony who visited people in lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic | Park Lane Stables RDA Since the start of a crowdfunding effort for Park Lane Stables RDA (Riding for the Diabled), over £362,000 has been raised toward the charity's goal of £1 million generated by Feb. 24. The Teddington-based riding school's landlord is not renewing their lease and is selling the property. The £1 million would go toward the purchase of the property and allow Park Lane Stables to continue its mission of providing therapy and happiness to children and adults with and without disabilities and mental health challenges. Normally, without the COVID-19 pandemic, the stables provide over 3,000 sessions of therapeutic riding a year. The property where the riding school is located has recently been listed as an asset of community valute (ACV) which is a significant step towards securing Park Lane's future in London. Stables Manager Natalie O'Rourke said, “ACV status is really important as it really strengthens our cause. I would like to say a huge thank you to everybody who has contributed to the 'Save Our Stables' fundraising campaign so far. The generosity and community strength at this tough time in our history has been truly heartening. The stables provide a lifeline for many families that will be devastated to lose the horses from the community.” To donate and for more information on the important work Park Lane Stables RDA carries out, please visit www.crowdfunder.co.uk/save-our-stables. The 2020 race ratings, additionally, will not be used to compile the three-year average ratings for any pattern or listed races, meaning 2020 will be treated as a gap year in terms of assessing race performances. Cuomo: New York Sports Venues Can Reopen Conditionally
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 5:34 pm | Back to: Top News Updated: February 10, 2021 at 5:35 pm Fans could soon return to Aqueduct | Chelsea Durand New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that sports arenas and stadiums with a capacity of better than 10,000 can re-open with limited spectators. The first event open to spectators in the state will be the National Basketball Association contest between the Sacramento Kings and Brooklyn Nets at the Barclay Center Feb. 23. The opening of venues will follow the Buffalo Bills pilot program, deemed an “unparalleled success” by Cuomo, following guidelines including Department of Health approval for venues and events, capacity limitations, testing requirements, mandatory face coverings, temperature checks and assigned, socially distanced seating. There will be a 10% capacity limit in arenas and stadiums. Officials at the New York Racing Association welcomed the news and will explore their options over the next weeks and months. “Sports and entertainment venues in New York are responsible for tens of thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in economic impact. NYRA applauds Governor Cuomo for taking action today to get New Yorkers back to work and fans back in seats,” said Patrick McKenna, Senior Director, Communications and Media Relations for NYRA. “NYRA is reviewing the newly announced guidelines to determine how they apply to Aqueduct Racetrack, where the first floor is currently the site of a New York State COVID-19 vaccination center, and to Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. “NYRA has been conducting live racing without spectators in attendance since June 3 and we are eager to welcome racing fans back to our venues at the appropriate time and with the approval of the New York State Gaming Commission.” Not a subscriber? Kentucky Three-Day Event to Go Forward
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Wednesday, February 10, 2021 at 4:02 pm | Back to: Shared News Updated: February 10, 2021 at 4:05 pm Photo courtesy Kentucky Three-Day Event Edited Press Release The Land Rover Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI Five Star presented by MARS Equestrian™ (LRK3DE), originally cancelled for 2021, will go forward Apr. 22 through Apr. 25 at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. The event will take place without spectators. “The uncertainties surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic placed us in the financially impossible position of having to run the Five Star event without spectators, a situation that left us no choice but to cancel the Five Star for 2021 in order to preserve it for many years to come,” said Mike Cooper, President of EEI. “We are humbled and honored by the response of the eventing community as they've stepped up in a mind-blowing way enabling us to go forward.” A fundraising campaign was started by athletes and fueled by the grassroots effort of the broader eventing community, generating more than $550,000 in donations to run the event. “While that still leaves us short of the amount needed, it is enough to convince us that the balance can be raised,” added Cooper. “We are now, with the assistance of the Kentucky Horse Park Foundation, committed to going forward with the Five Star.” Not a subscriber? Biden plans to use NFL stadiums for vaccinations
By admin | | 0 Comments |

FILE – U.S. President Joe Biden waves while boarding Air Force One as he departs Washington for travel to Wilmington, Delaware at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, U.S., February 5, 2021. REUTERS/Joshua Roberts With the NFL season in the books, the league offered the use of its stadiums for mass COVID-19 vaccinations. US President Joe Biden said on CBS’ Super Bowl pregame show Sunday that his administration intends to take the NFL up on its offer. “Absolutely we will,” President Biden told Norah O’Donnell. “I’m going to tell my team they’re available and I believe we’ll use them.” Seven NFL stadiums were already being used as vaccination sites — the Arizona Cardinals’ State Farm Stadium, Atlanta Falcons’ Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Carolina Panthers’ Bank of America Stadium, Baltimore Ravens’ M&T Bank Stadium, Houston Texans’ NRG Park, Miami Dolphins’ Hard Rock Stadium and the New England Patriots’ Gillette Stadium — but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sent a letter to the President earlier in the week offering the remaining 23 stadiums. Biden also expressed his “hope and expectation” that next year’s Super Bowl would be played in front of a fan-filled stadium. For more news about the novel coronavirus click here. Great British Stallion Showcase Launched
By admin | | 0 Comments |

The Great British Stallion Showcase 2021 began on Monday | TBA/GBRI The Great British Stallion Showcase 2021 was launched by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA) and Great British Racing International (GBRI) on Monday. The online format is due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic that prevented the TBA's Flat Stallion Parade and the National Hunt Stallion Showcase from taking place this year. Photos and videos of each participating stallion, as well as audio clips from stud managers, pedigree and fees are all available at www.greatbritishstallionshowcase.co.uk. In addition, the stallion pages also include the stallions' British EBF eligibility where appropriate. Following the theme of the live stallion parades, the Great British Stallion Showcase 2021 features first- and second-season Flat stallions and National Hunt stallions of all ages. Claire Sheppard, Chief Executive of the TBA, said, “The TBA and GBRI are delighted to launch the Great British Stallion Showcase for 2021. While sadly the restrictions around Covid-19 have disrupted this year's renewals of our annual Flat Stallion Parade and National Hunt Stallion Showcase, we wanted to offer breeders the next best opportunity to explore and view the outstanding stallion offering in Britain this year. “Our team at the TBA have liaised closely with stallion studs to source a range of visual and audio assets, while the GBRI team have successfully built a user-friendly, practical website which contains a wealth of information on each stallion. We are grateful for GBRI's expertise in creating this virtual showcase and we look forward to further promotion of the featured stallions over the coming weeks through behind-the-scenes footage and content across digital channels, including bespoke social media assets that have been provided to each stud involved.” Not a subscriber? Goffs to Ride Online Momentum
By admin | | 0 Comments |

Goffs kicks off its 2021 sales season on Tuesday and Wednesday with Part I of its February Sale. Prevailing unprecedented circumstances mean that the mixed sale of yearlings, 2-year-old, fillies and mares and horses in training will take place as a live online auction, with no horses, vendors or purchasers on the grounds at Kildare Paddocks. COVID-19 safety measures late last year meant that Goffs staged its Autumn Horses-In-Training and Yearling sales in the live online format, and the positive results spoke to the resilience of the bloodstock market as well as the work put in by Team Goffs to perfect the process. The turnover and average at the horses in training sale were up on 2019, with two lots surpassing the prior year's top price, while the yearling sale posted 10% increases in both average and median with 2261 individual online bids. All this means that the Goffs team can approach their 2021 curtain raiser with added confidence. “Goffs Online has done us so much good,” said Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby. “Ten years ago we would have been in a far more difficult position. Since we launched Goffs Online as a support to our sales last July at our breeze-up sales, we have sold over €6.3-million worth of horses to 12 different countries and taken something like 6,000 bids online. That is business that would not otherwise have been attainable [last year] had we not had Goffs Online. It may be peculiar and alien to some people but it's been an absolute god send in COVID and pandemic times when people can't travel. It's something we've come to rely on and it's been a great help.” “With breeding stock and form horses and older horses, I think it's a viable proposition to sell with online videos,” Beeby added. “It's not ideal, it's not what we'd like, but we're making the best of what we've got. We demonstrated with our horses in training sale last autumn that it can work and it can work well. We've sold horses now for up to €300,000 without anyone seeing the horse in the flesh and without anyone being anywhere near it.” The sale begins on Tuesday with a catalogue of 89 2-year-olds by sires like Australia (GB), Belardo (Ire), Churchill (Ire), Dandy Man (Ire), Decorated Knight (GB), Footstepsinthesand (GB), Make Believe (GB), Mehmas (Ire), New Bay (GB), Oasis Dream (GB), Starspangledbanner (Aus) and Zoffany. Highlights on pedigree include a colt by the recently deceased Zoffany (Ire) whose dam is a half-sister to G1 Ascot Gold Cup winner Big Orange (GB) (Duke of Marmalade Ire) (lot 4); a Mehmas (Ire) filly whose second dam is a full-sister to Fantastic Light (lot 21); and a filly from the first crop of Guineas winner Galileo Gold (Ire) whose second dam is champion and Group 1 producer Red Camellia (GB) (lot 72). Day one concludes with a small section of horses in training, including offerings from the Aga Khan. Wednesday is dedicated to breeding stock, with standouts expected to include Soft Lips (GB) (Rahy) (lot 140), a dual stakes producer in foal to New Bay; Margarita (Ire) (Marju Ire) (lot 141), a stakes producing full-sister to champion Soviet Song (Ire) in foal to Starspangledbanner (Aus); Kitkitty (Fr) (Olympic Glory Ire) (lot 145), a 4-year-old filly from the family of champion and sire Konigstiger (Ger); Royal Free Hotel (Ire) (Mastercraftsman Ire) (lot 155), a winning 4-year-old filly from the family of G1 Fillies' Mile and G1 Falmouth S. winner Simply Perfect (GB) (Danehill); Musical Rue (Ire) (Exceed and Excel Aus) (lot 163), a winning 4-year-old filly from the family of champion Finsceal Beo (Ire) (Mr. Greeley); Gracefully Done (Ire) (Australia GB) (lot 190), a daughter of GI Matron S. winner Sense Of Style (Thunder Gulch) in foal for the first time to Ten Sovereigns; Shringara (Ire) (Dansili GB) (lot 197), a winning 6-year-old whose dam is a half-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar Ire); Topaz Clear (Ire) (Pivotal GB) (lot 214), a half-sister to two stakes winners including top stayer Forgotten Rules (Ire) (Nayef) offered by breeder Moyglare Stud in foal to Zoffany (Ire); Rose Tinted Sand (Ire) (Siyouni Fr) (lot 219), a daughter of the well-related Group 3 winner Afternoon Sunlight (Ire) (Sea The Stars Ire); Gold Lace (Ire) (Invincible Spirit Ire) (lot 241), a stakes-producing mare in foal to Camelot (GB); and Rubira (Aus) (Lope De Vega Ire) (lot 253), a stakes winner in New Zealand in foal for the first time to New Bay. “The vendors have been very supportive and we're very grateful for it,” said Beeby. “Since the pandemic outbreak our goal has been to continue providing an ongoing marketplace by whatever means we can. Obviously we prefer to have physical sales and we were able to hold those with some very strict protocols last autumn, but there have been a couple of occasions, as now, where that hasn't been possible. So having an online system to back it up is a great help. It's not our first choice but it's certainly a very worthy second choice and it provides a market and allows us to continue to put liquidity into the market.” “We're grateful to the people who have supported the sale and stood their ground with entries,” Beeby added. “We'll be doing our best and we'd encourage people to engage online. Every online sale we hold we improve the service and we've been very gratified and flattered by the really positive feedback we've had, with people saying our platform is as customer-friendly if not more than any out there.” Part I of the Goffs February Sale begins online at noon on Tuesday and Wednesday. Part II of the sale is currently set for Mar. 11 as a live sale of short yearlings.
